Replacing your showerhead

Looking for easy ways to give your bathroom a lift? An old, corroded shower not only looks bad, but it could also be adding unnecessary dollars to your monthly water bill. For less than $100 and just a few minutes of your time, you can swap your old showerhead and give your bathroom a fresh new look, with the added bonus of reducing your water bill.

Choosing your new shower

When choosing your new showerhead, be sure to get one that meets your needs. Showerheads are available in a range of sizes, weights, and spray patterns so if you enjoy a single spray shower, or are looking for a pulsating massage shower, now’s the time to get what you want. Always check the WELS rating remembering the more stars it has, the more efficient it is.

Before you start

Make sure you have everything on hand before you start and away you go!

Materials

• New showerhead
• Towel or Rag
• Pliers/Adjustable Wrench
• Thread Seal Tape

Step 1 - Remove the old showerhead
Turn the old showerhead counter clockwise to see if you can remove it by hand. If it won’t move, wrap the towel/towel around the connection to protect it, and use the pliers or wrench to twist in a counter-clockwise direction until you have successfully removed it. It’s important to not put a lot of pressure on the shower arm to avoid breaking it.

Step 2 – Clean the old connection
There will most likely be some scale, rust, or grime left from the old showerhead. Using a rag to clean both the inside and the outside of the connection so it is clear of any debris and ready for the new shower.

Step 3 – Apply Thread Seal Tape
Apply 2-3 layers of thread seal tape in a clockwise direction around the threads of the shower arm. Press the tape firmly into the threads to ensure a tight fit.

Step 4 – Install your showerhead
You should be able to screw your new shower head-on by hand. Just place the new head on the shower arm and twist in a clockwise direction until it’s secure. If you are using pliers/wrench to tighten your connection, be sure to wrap a soft towel around your new showerhead to protect it and never over tighten.

Step 5 – Check for leaks
Turn on the shower for a couple of minutes and check for leaks. If you do have leaks, turn off the water and repeat steps 3 and 4 until it is leak-free.

Congratulations! You are now ready to use your new shower.
